How to Exercise Assertiveness

A.      Set Boundaries
1. Keep your soul alive! Know when to say ‘yes’ and when to say ‘no’.
 2. Always say ‘yes’ whenever the opportunity presents personal growth, expansion for impact, development and           strengthening of relationships, and social improvement.

3. Always say ‘no’ whenever the situation trespasses your rights and goes against your moral standards.



 4. Never lie when saying ‘no’, but be honest and just decline without giving excuses and too many reasons.

B.      Communicate Assertively
                     i.            Verbal Skills
o    Use a conversational tone
o    Be clear in your voice
o    Express thoughts openly (Avoid hinting)
o    Seek opinion  and feedback from others
o    Appreciate the feedback and opinion from others
o    Be objective (Avoid being judgmental)
o    Accept mistakes and apologize when wrong

                    ii.            Non-verbal Skills
o    Keep direct eye contact
o    Express emotions  clearly to reflect your words
o    Keep an upright posture (avoid slouching)
o    Use expressive gestures (avoid non-threatening gestures)
o    Listen to others without interrupting them
